Con Tierra conmovida, el artista plantea una mirada desestabilizadora sobre la violencia en México. Impactado por la desaparición de los 43 estudiantes y la consiguiente búsqueda de fosas clandestinas, pocos meses después de instalarse en el país, comenzó a documentar el horror de este fenómeno.
La serie de paisajes cicatrizados de estos sitios de violencia, en los cuales los familiares buscan a sus seres queridos en un contexto donde la justicia es inexistente, mantiene una cierta distancia con la representación extremadamente gráfica, tan generalizada cuando se trata de México.
Tanto la imperfección como la atemporalidad del negativo Polaroid que utiliza funcionan como un recordatorio de esta violencia ilimitada. Las huellas de los químicos presentes en las imágenes se mezclan con las cicatrices dejadas por la violencia en el paisaje y las poblaciones afectadas.
With The Earth that Shook, François Pesant offers a destabilizing perspective on violence in Mexico. Shocked by the disappearance of forty-three students in Guerrero—and the subsequent search for clandestine burial sites—just a few months after he’d moved to Mexico, he began to document the horrors surrounding these events.
Sites of violence where family members look for their disappeared relatives in a context of absolute lawlessness are represented here as a series of scarred landscapes that maintain a certain distance from the extremely graphic depictions of violence that otherwise prevail in Mexico.
The imperfections and timelessness of the Polaroid negatives that the artist uses function as a reminder of the unending savagery. The images’ chemical stains mingle with the scars left by violence on the landscape and on the affected communities.
(Montreal, Canadá, 1975) Fotógrafo y cinematógrafo. Estudió Sociología en la Universidad Concordia en Montreal. Su trabajo ha sido exhibido en México, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Francia, Rusia y Tailandia. Su obra forma parte de las colecciones del Museo McCord y Museum of the City of New York, entre otras, y colecciones privadas. Es coautor de Enemigo dentro (Ediciones Urano, 2015). (Montreal, Canada, 1975) This photographer and filmmaker studied sociology at Concordia University in Montreal. He has shown his work in Mexico, Canada, the United States, France, Russia and Thailand. His work is also in the collections of the McCord Museum and the Museum of the City of New York as well as in private collections. He co-authored the book Enemigo dentro (Ediciones Urano, 2015).
